Understanding an Iranian Nuclear Deal
Thursday, September 18, 2014 – 10:00 am – 11:30 am
James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies
1400 K Street, NW, Suite 1250
Washington, DC
Dear Colleagues,
The
Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) and the
James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) would like to invite you to a briefing by David Albright and Jon Wolfsthal on the Iran nuclear negotiations. David Albright of ISIS will provide a briefing and Jon Wolfsthal will provide moderation and comments. A discussion will follow.
The event will take place on Thursday September 18 from 10:00 AM-11:30 AM at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies located at
1400 K Street, NW, Suite 1250.
ISIS has been at the forefront of assessing the Iranian nuclear program for over a decade, providing technical analysis of its capabilities, policy solutions for resolving the crisis, and tracking the program’s growth. During the last year, it has closely tracked the negotiations with Iran and contributed to the development of the necessary elements of a long-term comprehensive nuclear agreement.
David Albright will discuss major technical features of a comprehensive, long-term nuclear agreement with Iran. The discussion will focus on both technical and policy issues, such as the role of breakout estimates in developing negotiating positions, the need for strict limits on Iran’s nuclear program and the impossibility of relying on verification alone, the impact of the IAEA’s effort to resolve the outstanding concerns about past and possibly on-going work on nuclear weapons and other military nuclear programs, and other technical and policy issues at the core of the differing negotiating positions.
The James Martin Center is the largest nongovernmental organization in the United States devoted exclusively to research and training on nonproliferation issues. CNS strives to combat the spread of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) by training the next generation of nonproliferation specialists and disseminating timely information and analysis.
Jon Wolfsthal, Deputy Director of CNS, will provide moderation and commentary. Wolfsthal previously served as the Special Advisor to Vice President Joseph R. Biden for nuclear security and nonproliferation and as a director for nonproliferation on the National Security Council.
