In light of recent talks by Russia about nuclear-armed torpedoes we want to share this slide set about Operation Crossroads from a course we just taught, which clearly shows the dangerous effects of an underwater nuclear explosion. It also shows the development of a large wave, which tends to reduce in height pretty rapidly over distance. The tsunami effect that both Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un emphasize is likely exaggerated and would likely be overshadowed by the massive radioactive fallout on the coastal city or port. In any case, while all nuclear weapons can have horrible consequences on civilian populations, hyping up underwater nuclear explosions against civilian ports and cities in this day and age is irresponsible and reckless.
